Dill Jones

(piano) 1923 - 1984

Dill Jones was born in Newcastle Emlyn, West Wales, on 19th August 1923. He died from cancer of the larynx at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York, on 22nd June 1984.

When this young Welshman left these shores for the promised land of jazz, he had won himself a fine reputation among the fans and critcs. He was in short, a good pianist, one of the best in Britain, but I don't think even the most optimistic among us would have expected such a startling transformation.

In the States, Dill has played with every important jazz musician, and his reputation is exceedingly high. Certainly the experience he has gained has enlarged his musical horizon and his progress has been rapid. His early years in Britain are behind him, although he has never lost his Welsh accent and the days of paying his dues are over. Here is the Dill Jones of 1972 in all his glory.
